How to handle bulk orders without getting burned

Bulk buying is where real profits live. It is also where beginners lose the most money. The trick is understanding the true cost of each unit, not just the sticker price.

How to handle bulk orders without getting burned

The unit economics trap

A low unit price means nothing if you order too much. If you buy 1,000 pieces for ₦500 each but only sell 100, your actual cost per unit sold is ₦5,000. Always buy the smallest viable bulk, test the market, and order more later.

Negotiating with factories

Factories price based on quantity, but they also price based on relationship. A repeat buyer gets better terms than a first-time buyer. Start with a small order, pay on time, and ask for a quote for a bigger order once you have a proven track record.

Incoterms matter

FOB, CIF, and EXW are not just acronyms. They determine who pays for what and where risk transfers. A low FOB price often turns into a high total cost once you add freight and insurance.

Storage costs

Bulk orders need storage. Storage costs money. If your stock sits for months before it sells, the storage cost eats into your margin. Factor storage into your cost calculation before you buy bulk.

Payment terms

Some suppliers accept partial payment upfront and the rest on delivery. If you can negotiate this, do — it reduces your risk and frees up cash for marketing.
