How to price imported products for sale

Pricing is the most important decision you will make. Price too high and nobody buys. Price too low and you make no money. The right price is almost always higher than you think.

The 3x rule (roughly)

A common starting point is to price your product at 3x the landed cost. This covers shipping, payment fees, returns, advertising, and a profit margin. For luxury or niche products, you can go higher.

Anchor to the market

Compare your price to what similar products cost locally. If your product is 3x the price of a similar local product, you need to justify it with quality, provenance, or convenience. If it is cheaper, you need to know why.

Test with real customers

Do not guess. Test different prices with real traffic and measure conversion rates. Raise the price until conversions start to drop, then drop slightly. That is your price.

The premium trap

Premium pricing works if you deliver premium quality. If you charge premium prices but deliver average products, customers will leave negative reviews and your brand will suffer.

The discount trap

Constant discounting trains customers to wait for sales and destroys your margin. Use discounts sparingly — for clearance, seasonal sales, or acquiring new customers. Do not build your business on permanent sales.
