Understanding shipping times from China (without the guesswork)
Shipping times from China vary wildly. The same product can arrive in 7 days or 90 days depending on the method, the destination, and the season. Here is what to expect.
The four main shipping methods
Express courier (DHL, FedEx) takes 3-7 days. Air freight takes 7-15 days. Sea freight takes 30-60 days. Rail freight (via the Belt and Road route) takes 20-40 days. Each method has a different cost, which is why the choice matters.
Why shipping times vary so much
Chinese New Year, national holidays, customs inspections, and port congestion all add days. A shipment that should arrive in 15 days can take 40 if it lands during a Chinese holiday.
How to plan around the delays
Order well in advance of any peak season. Add 50% to the estimated shipping time as a buffer. Track shipments daily during peak periods and communicate proactively with the customer.
The consolidation trick
Instead of shipping each order separately, group several orders into one shipment. This reduces per-order freight and customs clearing costs. Most reliable freight forwarders offer consolidation as a service.
What to do if a shipment is late
Communicate proactively. A customer who is told in advance that their order will be late is far more forgiving than one who finds out when the tracking does not update. Delay communication is one of the most common trust killers in e-commerce.
